Laser Technology

Rose Mak Dermatology & Laser Clinic is a recognised specialist dermatology practice right in the heart of Melbourne CBD utilising the Candela VBeam Prima system to treat a wide range of skin conditions.  Dr Rose Mak is one of the few dermatologists in Melbourne with extensive experience and expertise in using the newest VBeam Prima laser technology to treatment different skin conditions ranging from rosacea and facial veins, red scars, red stretch marks to vascular birthmarks such as port wine stain.

VBeam Prima laser is an innovative laser that offers advances over the older VBeam Perfecta laser.  The VBeam Prima laser system comprises the dual 595nm and 1064nm wavelengths system.  The 595nm wavelength penetrates the depth of the skin at where the target blood vessels lie, and this wavelength preferentially targets the haemoglobin in the blood vessels, and relatively less on melanin (pigment).  As a result, VBeam Prima is highly effective in targeting the blood vessels in the skin whilst at the same time avoiding absorption by melanin (skin pigmentation), hence it treats skin redness remarkably well and has a good safety profile in different skin types, including in darker skin types.

In additional to the original 595nm laser technology, VBeam Prima also comprises the 1064nm laser wavelength to treat larger and deeper vessels and skin wrinkles.

Common questions

Common conditions treated by Vbeam Prima pulsed-dye laser include:

  • Rosacea and facial redness
  • Facial and spider veins
  • Benign vascular structures (such as cherry angiomas, venous lakes)
  • Vascular birthmarks (port wine stains and haemangiomas)
  • Red acne marks
  • Red scars
  • Red stretch marks
  • Leg veins
  • Skin wrinkles

You may experience mild discomfort similar to a rubber band snap. Treatment may require multiple sessions, with each session taking between 15 to 30 minutes.

After laser treatment, mild redness may occur lasting from several hours to 1-2 days.  Swelling may develop soon after treatment, this would usually clear by the next day but may sometimes last for 2-3 days.  Most patients do return to work either on the same day or on the day after treatment.  Bruising can occur and may last for 5-10 days.  You may apply ice or cold pack to the treated area.  You may also wash the treated areas with a mild soap, gently pat dry the skin surface, then apply moisturiser to help soothe the treated areas.  A water-based makeup may be applied as a cover-up, provided that there is no crust formation on the skin surface.  Sun protection before, during and after laser treatment is important.
